ORPHANED LAND – Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs

Many metal bands nowadays lack something major that some of us enjoy and that is a strong message. Orphaned Land has always stood behind their political and moral views and five years after All Is One, the Israeli progressive metal act have returned with another strong presentation of peace, hope, unity and recognition of what this world lacks. Released on January 26th through Century Media Records, this may be another one of the best representations of Orphaned Land’s skill and diverse sound that is flourishes more with every release.

Clocking in around 63 minutes, it already gives that distinct Orphaned Land feel. The album comes in as a combination of melodic death, progressive rock, traditional folk instrumentation, and orchestral arrangements which is not new to the band’s already developed formula. All of these pieces of the group’s unique sound are present here in good measure. Tracks such as We Do Not Resist and Only the Dead Have Seen the End of War bring forth some of Orphaned Land’s heaviest material since Mabool, with Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates lending his unique vocals to latter track. The album also includes the expected traditional folk instrumental as well as a nine minute epic journey that features Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis).

The album overall is what would be expected by Orphaned Land and it surely did not disappoint. The album features everything and more than anticipated for this follow up to All Is One. If you enjoy progressive metal with a strong message, perfectly presented instrumentation and music that takes you on a journey, then this album is for you.

Overall Score: 9.5/10
